As you know, the tech sector is trying to reinvent how people interact with smart devices. Following this trend, Samsung is planning a daring foray into AI wearables like earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces.

Samsung’s Chief Operating Officer Won-joon Choi is looking for smart device concepts that are hands-free and convenient for regular users. According to him, next-generation gadgets will likely be worn and not carried. This may include any wearable that feels unobtrusive and natural, for example, glasses, watches, necklaces, rings,  and other jewelry pieces.

The company is moving away from replacing smartphones with AI assistants that work in tandem with them (for instance, AI-powered smartwatches). Their goal is to create tools that eliminate the need for people to reach for their phones in order to do daily tasks more quickly.

In general, all state-of-the-art appliances today try to incorporate AI into commonplace tasks. Major tech companies are quickly developing gadgets that require little to no manual input. At the same time, AI services like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini become much more powerful and get closer to general computer intelligence.

Among all the AI-powered accessories, glasses are leading the way. According to market reports, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which were first introduced 2 years ago, have already sold 2,000,000 pairs. After the launch of the glasses, Meta strengthened its collaboration with EssilorLuxottica (Ray-Ban’s parent company) and will likely produce more AI wearables. Other companies like Google, Samsung, and Snap, are not far behind and have created their own AI glasses. Also, OpenAI in collaboration with Apple’s former designer Jony Ive are working to create an unnamed AI hardware project that is planned to launch the following year.

Choi said that Samsung is looking at all possibilities when it comes to smart jewelry, for instance, custom necklaces, pendants, or earrings enabled by AI. However, not all device concepts always make it past the testing or prototype phase. Choi pointed out that even though they can explore an idea of some wearable, it doesn’t mean it will 100% become a product.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of difficulties in the development of AI devices. Samsung is not alone here. Lots of AI substitutes for phones have failed because the startups that developed them couldn’t face market challenges. The Humane AI Pin, which was later acquired by HP several months ago, suffered from a high price point and some performance problems. Meanwhile, the Rabbit R1 had numerous updates after lackluster performance at the start. The startup Friend has already postponed releasing its AI-enabled necklace several times.

Samsung’s solution is not about stand-alone gadgets, but about creating AI-accessories that improve phones’ features, which are already there without displacing any of the mobile infrastructure. Choi also admitted that there could be some limitations for even the most advanced wearables. The company is working on sunglasses now, but not every user is comfortable with how they change their look, which is why Samsung is leaning towards more discreet and at the same time very customizable alternatives. As jewelry lovers, we can’t wait to see the next big invention in electronic jewelry pieces. In the foreseeable future, Olertis may offer you custom AI pieces that will help you with your daily tasks. In the meantime, let’s just see how major tech giants are paving the way towards smarter jewelry of the future.
