Owners of the store offering jewelry and watches in Hartsdale, New York, now have some hope as 2 men were arrested last week and put in jail without bail.
The arrested criminals, who presumably stole precious items for almost $2 million, are Kevin Williams and Byron Wilson, who are both under 30 years old. However, two other suspects have not yet been caught. The incident happened in the beginning of December last year, at Tarrytown Jewelers in Westchester Square shopping plaza.
Police have security footage with the suspects in New Jersey earlier on the day of the heist. Most likely, they also stole a Jeep, as it couldn’t be a coincidence that the same car was reported stolen. A few hours later, these men were seen leaving this vehicle with hammers. They broke the jewelry store window to get inside. At that moment, there was a customer, looking at the goods. The robbers moved the customer aside, broke several glass cases, and took the jewelry. After filling their bags, they went outside and got in the car.
Prosecutors said the robbers stole neckpieces, earrings, bands, and diamonds. Moreover, 70 Rolexes were missing, which alone are worth about one million.
Williams and Wilson weren’t too careful and probably didn’t expect that their path could be tracked via their phones. They stole the registration plate to put it on the car they used, and GPS showed that they were close to the location where it was stolen. The cellular location tracking also helped establish that the thefts visited New York City’s Diamond District. Lawyers representing the government say both men took photos of themselves holding large amounts of money. Seems that they wanted to boast more than everything. By analyzing their movements, police assumed that they sold some jewelry and got the money.
The acting U.S. Attorney said that the arrests show clearly that people who commit serious crimes like these will be found and punished.
Both Williams and Wilson live in Irvington, New Jersey. They have been charged with robbery and planning a robbery. Police are also investigating if the two men were involved in other similar robberies in Nassau County.
